The new Safety Standard Helmet Rating is now available to complement the ACU Gold Standard / ECE 22.05 Standard. The new rating system (SHARP) will use a One to Five Star rating system, of the results of the DfT testing programme A spokesman for the DfT says '' Our tests have demonstrated very real differences in the levels of protection offered by the current range of helmets, despite all of them satisfying the minimum legal requirements (ECER 22.05). The difference can be significant in respect of injury outcomes. Our scientific analysis has shown that we could save up to 50 Motorcyclists lives' a year if all riders wear helmets that score well in our rating.''
